Gay porn star Dean Monroe has just announced his retirement on his blog! In the blog post explains that porn studios don’t want to shoot him anymore, even after winning the Best Porn Star award at the Cybersockets, because he filmed an oral only and a solo scene for one of the most popular bareback studios, Treasure Island Media.
It’s sad to see another gay porn star leaving the industry, because in just a last couple of days Ricky Larkin and Rod Daily have also announced their retirement.
“After 13 exciting and wonderful years in an industry that has given me confidence, creative expression, financial stability, the opportunity to travel and many life long friendships the gay porn world today has become a total disappointment.
Last year I said yes to a request by Treasure Island Media, the largest and most well know bareback studio, to shoot 2 scenes for them. One in London and the other in California. As through out my career I’ve been a strong advocate of safe sex I agreed to it under the terms that the duo scene would be oral only and I would do a second jack off solo scene. All was agreed and the scenes were in the can.
At this point I need to add that most mainstream gay porn companies are now shooting bareback content. In the early 80’s after the Aids epidemic and discovery of the virus and how it was transmitted the gay porn world reacted by shooting condom only safe sex. It seems that today in 2013 the studios have decided to start relaxing the noose on condom use by shooting more bareback content due to it’s financial gain and due to the growing attitudes that its ok if you get infected you can still have a normal life the medication can control everything. The backlash that followed the release of my 2 scenes for Treasure Island took me by surprise. On all the various blogs and websites the negative and hateful comments just kept pouring in. I had to break my silence and explain myself via thesword.com that seem to be the epicenter of the whole discussion.
Well just like everything in porn the brawl lasted a mere few weeks and then was forgotten…..almost.At the beginning of this year I received the Best Porn Star award at the Cybersockets voted on by the fans. With this in mind I returned to the U.S. with a fresh and eager attitude only to discover that not one of the many many studios I’ve collaborated with wanted to shoot me. This was a surprise and confusing to me but ultimately i knew the reason why. Which brings me to the situation in the industry today. In one word Chaos. Chaos in terms of the attitudes, the way people are cast, the standards that are followed and the greed and selfishness amongst the studio owners. In my situation no one wants to cast me because they believe i only do bareback now which means I’m likely HIV+ and that would be putting their filming at risk. Studios like MEN.com would prefer to use straight gay for pay actors who probably have never been tested rather than passionate gay performers who get tested regularly.
Unless there is a gold standard followed by the whole industry where every single performer is tested regularly before a shoot how can a studio know and decide on a models situation and whether he is suitable and safe. There is an ignorance and hypocrisy amongst studio directors today that is bringing the whole industry down and I only hope things will change very soon.
As for my situation I always knew the time would come when I would slowly have to say farewell and in no means is that sad. Im happy to have made it through these 13 years happy, healthy, sane and still safe. And much wiser.
When I began writing this blog in 2006 with the utmost enthusiasm it was my goal to let the fans and readers into my life and my adventures in porn. I hope you have discovered something of interest and had a few “happy” moments along the way.”

Sorry I dont buy it Dean Monroe is a veteran of the industry and if I as a lay porn watcher know that major studios don’t like their stars doing Bareback productions( especially for in your face studios like TIM studios) then Mr Monroe should have known that too. Wish him the best, he sure had a good run!
I’ll miss Dean. Nice explanation on his part! Safe sex is hot sex at the end of the day.
Ditto!
This is truly another performer that’s going to be railroaded no only from the studios, but us the commentors, who are taking a negative stand on the soapbox of what we once had to be downtrodden by the bible thumpers, politicians, and family members. We have not learn any thing but becoming negative gays.. In a world of an already confusion. No one is together any more, everyone is negative, hateful, and bigoted. I remembered Dean making these movie, and truly he just did what he said above, and the comment went aflying, all bad, and then it went as Dean looks sad, old etc…. As you know with thirteen years in the business, you are not going to look sixteen forever, but we play into the words that spew out from the depths hearsays, looks, and imagination of the negative mind. One of the porn performers, a good friend of mine told me of a friend of his who had gotten the HIV virus from getting cum shot in his eyes.. so safe sex offers no protection really, but the words hurt the most, and stay with you the longest, no matter how QP, thank you for always bringing us the best news on our favorites guys, and keeping us informed. I’ve learned a lot about people doing comments, positive and negative, and have prayed for the negative to become positive, but right now it’s a losing battle. So far your site have not been affected and I hope it never will, but with popularity come the negative. Thanks my friend.
Thanks a lot, Darkhog:) I’m very lucky to have you as one of my readers! Fortunately, I’ve never had to moderate any of the comments, because you guys (Darkhog, DT, Josh, Lobtaylor, Laphog etc.) are simply amazing! Thank you!
Believe me QP, some of the things people write or comment on are hateful, mean, and downright depressing. When I came here, it was like finding a real friend, which you could express the celebration of being gay, free, and enjoy men, and desires that you knew was out of your reach. You also brought an insight with letting us know about what’s going on in the gay porn world, by talking with some of the performers, and had the modesty to get involved sometimes. I know it not easy to do
amen, Dark!
Thanks DT!
Spot on!
Believe me guys, the words, the flags, just the whole things of what people with say about others, is bullying, and we don’t know why people hate gays so much. We even hate each other. Thing s won’t get better until we look in the mirror at ourselves. Love you guys.
*smooches,* QP!
Thanks DT! Have an amazing weekend!
you, too! 🙂
Thirteen years in the business is a VERY long time. Most performers don’t even make to five. Dean has lasted way longer than most guys. At the end of the day, we all have to know when it’s time to step out of the limelight and let other performers have their moment to shine.
Granted it may not have been the way he wanted to go (given the backlash he got for working with TIM) but use this as an opportunity to move onto other things. Thanks for all the hard work Dean. Much appreciated. Take care man and all the best for the future!
Longevity don’t exist in the porn industry..Dont kid urselfs.
If your in the SEX INDUSTRY your putting yourself at HIGH RISK of STD-I’s Infections…YOU SERIOUS GUY’S.
He never appealed to me but lots of people must have liked him for him to have lasted so long. I find gay porn boring now, not enough threesomes and orgies, too many scenes featuring completely naked guys rather than guys in some clothing. To me, a hot pornstar in chaps, socks and high tops, cycling gear minus the shorts or crotchless, backless cycling shorts (to give a few examples) is far sexier than a completely naked guy and helps to strengthen the theme of a particular scene. He’s probably leaving the industry at the right time, as I don’t think the output is as good as five or ten years ago.
